My mother went to the ER after spending a night in distress because a piece of food was lodged low in her throat. She has COPD and therefore limited breathing. She was summarily dismissed by the attending nurse who told her that she just needed to eat something. After many more hours in distress, she called my me. I suggested her to apply pressure in a Heimlich like maneuver, take a deep breath and cough as hard as possible. Problem solved. The food was dislodged.
